July 30th is International Day of Friendship, designed by the UN. In honour of the day, the Yarm Distillery team are reflecting on some of the different mixers that are best friends with our range of alcohol!
Tonic Water
Tonic water originated in early 19th century India, where British soldiers were given medical quinine to prevent malaria. It tasted extremely bitter, so they would mix it with soda water to make it more palatable — and, as it turned out, it became even more palatable when mixed with their gin rations!
At Yarm Distillery, we handmake a variety of flavours of Yarm Gin in our copper stills. We offer some suggested tonic and garnish pairings on our website, but with so many choices, the opportunities for customisation are endless!
Cola
Whether you choose Pepsi, Coca Cola, or an independent like Fevertree’s Madagascan Cola, this brown, syrupy liquid is a traditional accompaniment to several types of alcohol for a reason. Vodka, rum, whisky… which is your favourite combination?
Fruit Juice Mixers
Alcohol is paired with fruit juices in many of the most well-known cocktail recipes, from the Mimosa to the Mai Tai. Marrying your favourite tipple with the perfect fruit juice can enhance flavour notes and create a refreshing, well-rounded drink. Across the globe, the most popular fruits to pair with alcohol are citruses (lemon, lime and orange in particular), tropical fruits like pineapples and coconuts, and berries.
Of course, you can experiment as much as you like to find new and delicious combinations. As a general guide, one part alcohol to two parts fruit juice is a good ratio, but this can be adjusted as you prefer.
