Dear Distillery Diaries,
This June, the Yarm Distillery team are celebrating World Gin Day — but what is it, and how can you join in?
What is World Gin Day?
On the second Saturday in June each year, gin-lovers across the world raise a glass of their favourite tipple for World Gin Day. This year, it falls on 13th June (just over a week before Father’s Day, in case you needed a gift suggestion!).
To celebrate World Gin Day, you can follow the hashtag #WorldGinDay on social media, and pour yourself a glass of your favourite flavour of Yarm Gin.
Gin: Did You Know?
- Gin can’t be frozen because it has such a high alcohol content. Some people like to keep their gin in the freezer so that they can serve it ice-cold!
- In the medieval period, a doctor might prescribe gin in an attempt to cure an infection.
- The country that consumes the most gin per capita is The Philippines.
- In the 1730s, Londoners were drinking an average of about 2 pints of gin per person each week! Gin was cleaner and safer than the drinking water in the city, and was relatively inexpensive, so a real issue with alcoholism developed amongst the population. In the end, Parliament passed several acts to try and limit the drinking and distilling of gin. Always drink responsibly, everyone.
