Distillery Diaries: National Gin and Tonic Day

Gin and Tonic

Dear Distillery Diaries,

This month, we are celebrating National Gin and Tonic Day. Read on for recipe recommendations, fun facts, and more information about this beloved tipple.

National Gin and Tonic Day

National Gin and Tonic Day  falls annually on 9th April in the USA- but we are celebrating it right here in Yorkshire too! The aim of this awareness event is to shine a spotlight on a cocktail that has been enjoyed worldwide since the 19th century. Cheers to that.

The History of the G&T

Did you know that gin and tonic was originally created by British soldiers stationed in India? They were given rations of quinine (a very bitter compound made from tree bark) to combat the risk of malaria, but it tasted disgusting. To make it more palatable, the soldiers started to mix their quinine with gin, sugar, lime and water — creating the gin and tonic! Consequently, Schweppes Indian Tonic Water was introduced in 1861, making the drink even easier to create and enjoy.

The Perfect Gin and Tonic Recipe

The widely accepted ratio for the ideal gin and tonic is one part gin to three parts tonic water. Fill a glass with a generous handful of ice, and pour over 2 ounces of your chosen gin. Top up the glass with 6 ounces of tonic water, and stir gently with a straw to combine. Garnish with a lime wedge.

The basic recipe allows for lots of customisation if you want to experiment with different flavour profiles. For example, we recommend trying our delicious Yarm Rhubarb and Ginger Gin with Fevertree Mediterranean Tonic and a twist of orange peel for garnish!
