Distillery Diaries, March 2026: Moscow Mule Day

Dear Distillery Diaries,

This month, we are celebrating a beloved cocktail. Read on for more about the Moscow Mule!

What is a Moscow Mule?

The Moscow Mule cocktail was created in Los Angeles in the 1940s. Whilst it has been celebrated ever since, the recipe was first designed to get rid of ingredients that were not selling well at the time.

John Martin had just bought the rights to Smirnoff vodka production and sales in North America, but it was not proving popular in the USA. Another businessman, Jack Morgan, owned a popular Sunset Strip bar but was struggling to persuade his patrons to try his ginger beer recipe. Finally, a Russian emigrant named Sophie Berezinski was trying to sell thousands of solid copper mugs made by her father’s factory back in Russia.

None of them were having any luck, so they combined their efforts, and the Moscow Mule was born! The original recipe featured Smirnoff vodka and Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer, mixed with a dash of lime and served in Berezinski’s copper mugs.

Moscow Mule Day

March 3rd is Moscow Mule Day — and for good reason! The 3rd day of the 3rd month signifies the three ingredients in a traditional Moscow Mule. An example of both delicious flavours and innovative marketing, the Moscow Mule is still a cultural staple nearly 90 years after it was first made.
